On March 7, WFO Honolulu requested GOES-West RSO due to their radar being down and expected thunderstorms/flooding. Given the request, GOES-16 mesoscale sector 1 was positioned over Hawaii, centered at 21N 157W. This position was far (longitudinally) from that of the satellite subpoit (89.5W), degrading the resolution significantly. The angle however, did provide a unique side view of convection that moved through the region, particularly over Maui. Below is a 1 hour and 45 minute animation of GOES-16 0.64 um 1-min visible imagery over the region between 0145 UTC and 0329 UTC on the 8th (3:45 pm to 5:30 pm local time on the 7th). With the sun already past it’s peak, the east side of convection (what we are viewing) at this hour is not very reflective (dark) compared to the surrounding low clouds.
